Stress is the Enemy, as it creates great imbalance in the body & is the root cause of disease. When we are stressed, frightened or feel threatened, our body enters a state of “fight or flight”. This state can be traced back to our ancestral roots and was meant to help the body escape extreme danger (i.e. there is a lion at the mouth of the cave).
During fight or flight:
our central nervous system goes into over-drive
our body produces an increase in adrenaline
breathe rate/heart rate increase, etc.
our body places its total focus on out-running the lion
body is not worried about producing white blood cells, growing long lustrous hair, or fighting disease
we are in survival mode
MODERN LIFE = CONSTANT FIGHT OR FLIGHT
This “fight or flight” response is meant to be temporary and is not a healthy state to be in for extended periods of time.
Although we are no longer concerned with out-running a lion (at least not in my neighborhood), our bodies recognize & respond to the stress of our fast-paced modern world in the same way--keeping are bodies in a constant state of fight or flight. This:
The mind/body connection is profound! Your body functions at the discretion of your thoughts.
EXAMPLE #1: Two people, same sex, same age, same diagnosis. They are treated by the same doctor, same medications, One lives, one dies. Why?
One thought he would live--he believed it at his core.
One believed he would die.
EXAMPLE #2: Historically many tribal communities instilled their faith in members who were believed to be prophets. The prophet would often predict that a member would die on a specific date. And, they would. Why?
Because they believed they would. [This same thing often happens today when reckless doctors tell patients how long they will live].
As a man thinketh, so is he.
HOW TO GET THE OUTCOME YOU DESIRE
THE POWER OF SUBCONSCIOUS
Humans only use a very small, easily accessible, part of the brain; this is our conscious mind. However, deep-rooted beliefs, feelings, and behaviors are rooted in the subconscious mind.
THE SUBCONSCIOUS IS WHERE THE MAGIC HAPPENS
Meditation allows us to access the subconscious, where we can
implant the messages that we want to live
spark our immune system
heal the body
connect with spirit.
During meditation, the unconscious mind is relaxed and wide open to become one with the object of our focus. Visualizations that contain our intentions can have a powerful impact on our behavior, triggering goal attainment. When we access the subconscious, the object of our thoughts, intentions and desires become reality. Consider that:
Visualizations (like imagining little pacmans coming from the IV like an army and eating the tumor or fighting the infection) can be profoundly effective.
Meditation has been widely used to assist with natural child-birth for decades.
When deep relaxation/visualization is used before surgery, people have less anxiety, need less anesthesia, have less postoperative pain, and leave the hospital sooner.
Professional athletes have long used meditation to attain goals.
HOW TO MEDITATE.--AM I DOING IT RIGHT?
Many people worry that they are meditating wrong. They feel that there is supposed to be some mysterious, earth shattering feeling that will overcome them when they finally do it correctly.
don’t put pressure on yourself to make the session go any certain way
there is no right/wrong way to meditate
no right time/place.
it’s about what works for you.
“If you find you are living in peace, love, synchronicity, creativity, abundance, and joy--then you must be doing it right”! -Deepak Chopra
WHAT SHOULD I BE DOING DURING MEDITATION
many like to begin their sacred sessions with prayer
meditations can simply focus on breath, a candle flame, or nature
can visualize whatever serves you; goals, intentions, or a happy place
or focus on nothing, detaching from thought and just being present in your body.
listen to calming music or sit in silence.
if you feel your mind wandering, gently bring your mind back to your focal point (i.e. guided imagery, candle flame, visualization, mantra, etc.).
WHERE? WHEN TO MEDITATE?
Feel free to get your zen on anytime/anywhere the urge strikes you
No need for a cushy pillow or billowy clothes
Some like a sacred space for their practice, complete with alter/religious symbols, comfy mats, candles, relaxing music, etc.
many people meditate in bed, at their desk, in line at the bank, walking in nature, etc. (I love to “get in the zone” on my treadmill)
morning meditations are a great way to start your day
bed-time meditations provide a time for gratitude/reflection
some enjoy one long daily meditation, while others engage in several shorter sessions
always plan regular “sacred time”, for your daily practice
There really is no better way to enhance the power of the mind and its connection to body and spirit, then through meditation. Use meditation to still the mind, for healing, for spiritual clarity, and to visualize the life you truly want. Tap into the power of the sub-conscious; self-directing your life and effecting your health at a cellular level.
