So, what should you do when a family member receives a diagnosis?
Obviously, you want to respect the personal nature of such a journey, but let them know that you’re going to be with them every step of the way.
After our grandfather was diagnosed, we wanted to do whatever we could to help reduce his anxiety, to give him something to look forward to on treatment days & provide him some motivation to keep going.
Each time he has a treatment, we create a video as our “treatment reward”. Our grandfather really looks forward to his video message and we hope it helps motivate him to put treatment behind him so he can get back to “living life”!.
So far, these videos have turned out to be extremely fun to make and are deeply personal, as they really focus on grandpa’s personality. These videos are funny, low budget, motivational, and totally cheesy. We use iMovie to construct our cinema gold, which is free and easy to use. You can keep it simple and cut/splice videos and add music, or you can kick it up a notch like we did and add in some green screen effects.
WATCH & GET SOME IDEAS
The video shown below is the second video that we sent to our grandfather, it is simply a play on the number 2 and works hard to provide some motivation to keep going. Episode #3, which will also be listed below as soon as uYouTube approves it --ugh!) attempts to take a look at the bright side of all the symptoms grandpa was experiencing “No hair is a great excuse for a really sweet hat collection” and “bald is sexy”!
